Dealing with Depression: The PEARLS Program

PEARLS (Program to Encourage Active and Rewarding LiveS) is a one-on-one program that helps adults reduce depression.

  • 6–8 sessions over 19 weeks

  • Led by a certified PEARLS Counselor

  • Sessions can be at home, in the community, or online (telehealth)

  • Provided through CCACC Health Center and the Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence

Program Timeline

Recruitment and Screening

Telephone screening or in-person screening

Session 1-3

Weekly

1st may occur during the same visit as in-person screening or during a separate visit

Session 4-5

Every 2 weeks

Session 6-8

Once a month

Follow-Up Calls

Monthly for 3–4 months

Wrap-Up

Optional activities after 8 sessions

What to Expect

  • Initial screening to check eligibility

  • Every session begins with a short depression survey (PHQ-9)

  • Work with your counselor to:

    • Identify a personal challenge (like loneliness, housing, or money concerns)

    • Brainstorm solutions and create an action plan

    • Practice new steps each week

  • End each session by choosing a social, physical, and enjoyable activity to boost mood
