"You're Not Listening!"

How Improving Communication Between Generations Can Promote Students' Success and Happiness

Do you struggle with having engaging and meaningful conversations with your children? The children of immigrants often confront unique challenges that stem from balancing traditional values with the desire to assimilate into American society. Immigrant parents, who are frequently unfamiliar with American culture and its education system, often place unreasonable expectations on their children. This tension leads to conflict within the family unit.

Did you know that?

  • Asian American youths, age 15-24, have higher rates of suicidal thoughts than Caucasian Americans in the same age group.

  • Asian American women age 15-24 have the second-highest rate of completed suicide of any race/ethnicity in that age group—second only to Native Americans.

  • “Tiger-parenting” is utilized by only a minority of Asian parents, and has been associated with worse academic and mental health outcomes.

"You're not Listening!" was a seminar held on November 5th, 2016, at CCACC, in partnership with the Massachusetts General Hospital. The Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Cross-Cultural Student Emotional Wellness is a consortium of clinicians, educators, and researchers who are passionate about understanding and promoting cross-cultural and international student emotional wellness through a three-fold mission:

  1. Education and primary prevention

  2. Research

  3. Consultation, treatment, and referral

The Center was founded in 2014 by three Boston-based physicians who recognized a tremendous need to support the emotional health of students from non-Western cultural backgrounds. As practicing mental health clinicians, they noticed increasing referrals of Asian American students for problems like anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
